Toxic ‘‘Waist’’ Dump: Our Abdominal Visceral Fat

چکیده
M ore than 50 years ago, a French physician, Dr. Jean Vague, noted that complications in his obese patients had more to do with where the fat was deposited than how much was deposited (1). Dr. Vague is credited with developing the terms ‘‘android’’ and ‘‘gynoid’’ obesity. Android is the high-risk type of obesity typically found in males, where the fat is deposited centrally (apple shape). Gynoid is a low-risk type of obesity typically found in females, where the fat is deposited in the gluteofemoral region, that is, the buttocks and thighs (pear shape). Whereas this concept of the appleand pear-shaped obesity has been around for more than half a century, it is only recently that researchers have uncovered mechanisms underlying the health risks of differing fat deposition sites.

OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to examine body fat distribution using computed tomography (CT), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and anthropometry in relation to type 2 diabetes in urban Asian Indians. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS This is a case-control study of 82 type 2 diabetic and 82 age- and sex-matched nondiabetic subjects from the Chennai Urban Rural Epidemiology Study...
متن کاملCorrelation of serum leptin with anthropometric parameters and abdominal fat depots determined by ultrasonography in overweight and obese women.
Leptin is an adipocytokine that has an important role in energy homeostasis and therefore in the patho-physiology of obesity. Leptin levels are influenced by many factors such as gender, race, energy intake, fat mass, etc. The aim of our study is to investigate the relationship of circulating leptin levels to anthropometric parameters and to the subcutaneous and visceral fat tissue determined b...
متن کاملValidity and reliability of the sagittal abdominal diameter as a predictor of visceral abdominal fat.
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the reliability of the sagittal abdominal diameter and its validity as a predictor of visceral abdominal fat, as well as to identify the most appropriate cut-off points to identify the area of visceral fat that is known to represent a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. DESIGN Validation study. SUBJECTS 92 healthy volunteers (57 women, 35 men), age: 20-83 y, body ...
متن کاملPericardial fat, visceral abdominal fat, cardiovascular disease risk factors, and vascular calcification in a community-based sample: the Framingham Heart Study.
BACKGROUND Pericardial fat may be an important mediator of metabolic risk. Correlations with cardiovascular disease risk factors and vascular calcification in a community-based sample are lacking. We sought to examine associations between pericardial fat, metabolic risk factors, and vascular calcification. METHODS AND RESULTS Participants free of cardiovascular disease from the Framingham Hea...
متن کاملThe effects of abdominal interferential current therapy on waist circumference and visceral fat distance in obese women
[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of interferential current therapy on the waist circumference and visceral fat length in obese women. [Subjects and Methods] In this study, we selected 30 patients whose body mass index was over 25 kg/m2. The subjects were randomly assigned to receive interferential current therapy three times a week for four weeks (n=15) and tra...
